Information for Students Missing Grades as a Result of UAW Strike Activity

My transcript says an NR grade will turn into an F grade after one quarter; what should I do?

Students will not be penalized if their work remains ungraded. Approximately ten percent of faculty were unable to submit grades by the deadline; they have the ability to submit late grades through January 19. Please check for any emails or messages sent by your faculty about their timeline for grading.

Students enrolled in courses that have a graded prerequisite requirement

Fall 2022 term NR grades will be treated as passing grades for the purpose of enrolling in Winter 2023 classes, for both waitlisted and new add requests. The Office of the Registrar will provide regular updates to academic advisors of students whose NR grade is replaced with a failing grade. Please work directly with your academic advisor if you believe you have received a failing grade and should not or may not wish to continue in a Winter course.

Graduating students and students petitioning for a major change

Please work directly with your academic advisor for assistance.

    Financial Aid recipients

Students who are currently on probation for satisfactory academic progress (SAP) will be reviewed on an individual basis to determine to what extent their grades may have been impacted by an NR grade; students whose grades are otherwise passing will have their probation extended. SAP will not be evaluated for the full student community until the end of the academic year: June 2023; outstanding grades will not have any impact on financial aid prior to that date.

Please make a Zoom appointment with the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships with any additional questions you have, or call 949 824 8262.

    Veterans

Please see below for background information on Department of Education VA benefits as they relate to missing grades. The NR grade UCI will use falls into the first group described and will not immediately impact your benefits. If you are working with a faculty on a delayed grade please keep your academic advisor involved in the conversation so the faculty can be advised on the best protocol to use. The Office of the Registrar will also provide the Veterans Services Center with regular updates on grade changes. If you have additional questions or concerns, please reach out to the Veterans Services Center at veteran@uci.edu.

    • How does a No Report (NR), No Grade (NG), or Incomplete (I) affect my U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) education benefits?
    •
    • No Report (NR), No Grade (NG), and Incomplete (I) are not reported to the VA unless they turn into a non-punitive grade. Examples of non-punitive grades are a “W” (withdraw), a “NP” (no pass), a “I” (incomplete), or a “U” (unsatisfactory). Our office tracks these temporary gradings until they become a standard letter grade, such as A, B, C, D, or F. If an "F" grade is received, it is not reported to the VA as a non-punitive grade.
    •
    • How does a No Pass (NP), Unsatisfactory (U), or a Withdrawal (W) affect my U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) education benefits?
    •
    • For Chapter 31 and 33 beneficiaries, your Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) may be reduced if you receive a non-punitive grade. The VA will not pay for units that receive a No Pass (NP), Unsatisfactory (U), or Withdrawal (W) grade (or any other non-punitive grades), as the units do not count toward your degree progress and are not factored into your GPA. Units that are graded non-punitive must be deducted from your certified unit load. If this drops you below 12 units, your MHA will be reduced accordingly, and the VA will bill you for the balance.
    •
    • For Chapters 35 and 1606 beneficiaries, non-punitive grades (NP, U, and W) do not need to be reported to the VA unless the punitive grade brings you below a full-time rate. For example, you are an undergraduate student enrolled in 12 units and receive a non-punitive grate (NP, U, or W) for 4 units. In this case, we would have to report the unit adjustment to the VA as a unit decrease. This would correct your enrollment to 8 units instead of 12 units. However, if you are an undergraduate student enrolled in 16 units and receive a non-punitive grade for 4 units, we would not need to report a unit change to the VA since you remain over 12 units even with the reduction accounted.

    International Students

Students holding F-1 or J-1 visas who receive an NR grade will continue to meet their academic requirements for maintaining status if they were enrolled in 12 units during the quarter or received permission from the International Center to fall below 12 units.

An NR may affect students in the following categories:

    • Graduating students who are applying for Optional Practical Training (OPT) may not be able to submit the academic department completion verification on the Optional Practical Training I-20 Request Form.
    •
    • Continuing students traveling over Winter Break may need proof of enrollment and grades to apply for a new visa at a U.S. Consulate.

Please reach out to the International Center at internationalcenter@uci.edu if you need assistance.

    Student Athletes

Student athletes should reach out their Academic Athletic Coordinator with any questions they have. You may also contact Assistant Athletic Director Alexis McDonald at armcdona@uci.edu.

Contact the Registrar's Office with any other questions you may have.
