TERM: | DEFINITION: | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Starting Fall, 2008, candidates for a bachelor's degree at UC Irvine must satisfy the General Education (GE) course requirement by taking a specific number of courses in each of the following categories:
To see which courses satisfy a particular category, go to the Schedule of Classes and select a category in the General Education pull down menu. Refer to the UC Irvine's General Catalog for more information about the General Education requirements, in the Requirements for a Bachelor's Degree section. Prior to the Fall 2008 term, instead of the General Education requirements listed above, UC Irvine specified a set of required Breadth categories:
Because students enrolled before Fall 2008 have the option of satifying either the old Breadth requirements or the newer General Education requirements, the General Education pull-down menu in the Schedule of Classes allows you to select from either set of categories. |

The academic unit (i.e., "Physics", "Art History", etc.) that sponsors each course. Note: The returned list of courses may be truncated if you specify a large department unless you use some of the other criteria below to narrow the search (for instance, a Course Number, Course Code Range, upper or lower division for Course Level, or the Course Type). |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The department's designation for an approved course (e.g. Art
History 198, Social Ecology 10, French 1c).
This field searches the database for the course numbers as listed
in the UCI General Catalogue or
WebSOC, the
Schedule of Classes. You may list single course
numbers or a course number range, such as 5-20.
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
This field allows you to limit the search to Lower Division (course numbers 1 through 99), Upper Division (course numbers 100 through 199), or Graduate/Professional courses (course numbers 200 and higher). This is an easy way to limit the number of courses returned for large departments. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The 5-digit code representing a class in the printed Schedule of Classes (e.g. 29001). You may specify a list of single codes or a range of codes. For instance, the course code range 03000-06999 would allow a search across all departments in the School of the Arts. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
This field searches the database for classes taught by a particular instructor. Enter the last name only, in upper or lower case. • Hint: If the instructor's last name is short and matches too many other last names (e.g., "frank" would return all instructors named Frank, and also instructors named Franke and Franklin), place a comma directly after the last name ("Frank," -- instead of -- "Frank") to exclude longer last names. |

This field searches the database for course titles that contain the word you specify. For example, photo would match courses named BASIC PHOTOGRAPHY and ADV PHOTO for the department of Studio Art. |

This pull-down menu allows you to specify the class type you are searching for:

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The number of units (3, 4.5) approved for each class. This
field searches the database for courses with the number of units you
specify here.
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
This field searches the database for classes offered on (but not limited to) the days you specify. Entering 'W' will return all the classes that have Wednesday as one of their meeting days. Entering 'MTu' will return classes that meet on both Monday and Tuesday (and possibly other days of the week as well). You can use any of the following abbreviations:

This field restricts the search to courses that start on or after the time specified. |

This field restricts the search to courses that end by the time specified. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
This input option limits your search to courses that have an enrollment capacity that matches your specification. For example, "<21" (to denote less than 21) or ">200" (to denote more than 200). |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
You can use this option to exclude courses that have reached their maximum capacity, or include the ones that still have room on their Waiting List. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Clicking this check box limits the search to classes that are eligible for Electronic Add/Drop. Note that WebReg is not available beyond the 2nd week of the term for most courses. |

Use this option to adjust the font size in the results page. For example, 75 percent will make all characters 3/4 normal size, while 150 percent will make them 50% larger. • This option only works if JavaScript mode is enabled on your web browser. |
