The Waitlist System: How it Works and FAQs Last Updated:  Jun 11, 2008, 7:42 AM PDT

  • If you are unable to enroll in a course because it is full, you have the option of placing yourself on a waiting list if the waitlist is activated by the school/department offering the course.
  • When you request a class that is full, WebReg will notify you of the waitlist option and indicate the number of students currently on the waitlist.
  • If a course utilizes the Waitlist System you will see the number on the waitlist in the "WL" column in the Searchable Schedule of Classes (WebSOC).
  • Use the Waitlist Menu to add or drop yourself from a waitlist.
  • You must be eligible to enroll in the class to waitlist it, i.e. satisfy all restrictions, prerequisite checking (if activated by the department), no time conflicts.
  • Similar to adding classes, you must waitlist required co-classes or you are dropped from the waitlist due to "co-class mismatch." (see Terms and Definitions)
  • Be sure to waitlist all required co-classes during the same enrollment session.
  • You may waitlist one substitutable section of a course in which you already are enrolled. For example, you may prefer to be enrolled in discussion 2, but it is full. Enroll yourself in the lecture and an open discussion section, then place yourself on the waitlist for discussion 2. If space becomes available, you will be automatically added to discussion 2 and dropped from the other discussion section.
  • You may be enrolled in a lecture and discussion/lab and waitlisted for another section.
  • The waitlist is driven by the discussions, so when the discussion sections are full, you cannot waitlist the lecture.
  • Students are notified by email when they are added to a class.
  • If you decide you no longer want to add a waitlisted class, be sure to drop yourself from the waitlist.
  • Students are responsible for their enrollment in classes, including classes added via the waitlist system.
  • Departments may activate and deactivate the Waitlist System by course according to their enrollment management plans. Normally, the Waitlist System is used during the regular enrollment period, the Adjustment Period, and the first two weeks of classes.
  • Waitlisted class units are counted as part of your unit maximum, which is 20 units for undergraduate students and 16 units for graduate students.
  • Waitlisted classes do not count toward the Minimum Required Units (MRU) for Financial Aid recipients, nor can waitlisted units be counted when verifying full-time enrollment because you are not officially enrolled in a waitlisted class.
  • When/If a department deactivates the waitlist for a class, the professor may or may not add students based upon the waitlist. Be sure to attend the classes you want to add, regardless of your position in the waitlist queue.

FAQs

·How does a student know if a class is waitlisted?
When the student attempts to add a class that is full, WebReg will indicate the number of students on the waitlist (it could be zero). If the class does not have a waitlist, WebReg will indicate only that the class is full.

·Can a class be waitlisted if it is not full?
No.

·How many classes can a student waitlist?
Undergraduate students can enroll in and waitlist classes totaling 20 units.
Students may waitlist no more than ten class sections (including sections carrying zero units).
Students may waitlist a substitutable section of a linked class and also be enrolled in another section of that class.

  • Examples:
A student enrolled in 12 units can waitlist two 4-unit classes.
A student enrolled in four 4-unit lectures and two 2-unit labs cannot waitlist a unit-bearing class due to the 20 unit maximum allowable units.
A student enrolled in Spanish 1C Lec A can waitlist Spanish 1C Lec B (if it is full). When space becomes available in Lec B and the student is first on the waitlist, he is automatically added to Lec B and dropped from Lec A.

·How will a student know if a waitlisted class is added to her schedule?
An email is sent to the student's UCI email address when she moves from the waitlist into the class.

·After class intstruction begins, are all waitlists deactivated?
No. Classes designated as EAD (Electronic Add/Drop) classes are eligible to utilize the waitlist system as long as they do not require three-way co-class enrollment (i.e., lecture, lab and discussion).

·How can students verify waitlisted classes?
Students may login to WebReg to display their waitlisted classes via the Waitlist Menu.

Enhanced Options for Two-Way Linked Co-Classes

An example of a two-way linked co-class is a lecture with one or more required discussions. The departmental Schedule of Classes Coordinators instruct the Registrar to link the lecture and discussion(s) so that students must enroll in both the lecture and a corresponding discussion section.

29061 1AS/A Dis A1  Hum Core Lec S/A
29062 1AS/A Dis A2  Hum Core Lec S/A

29082 1AS/A Dis 21  Hum Core Lec S/A
29090 1AS/A Lec C  Hum Core Lec S/A
29091 1AS/A Dis 30  Hum Core Lec S/A
29092 1AS/A Dis 31  Hum Core Lec S/A

Scenario 1:
Susie Anteater wants to take Human 1AS/A Lec A, course code 29060. Dis section A1 is open, but the student prefers Dis A2. The student can enroll in Lec A and Dis A1 and waitlist Dis A2 through WebReg. If space in Dis A2 becomes available and the student is first on the waitlist, the student will be automatically dropped from discussion A1 and added into Dis A2; she remains enrolled in Lec A as well.

*The Waitlist System can be utilized with multiple "substitutable sections" as well. In the above example, lectures A, B, and C are linked as substitutable sections. If Lec B is full but space is available in Lec A and Lec C, WebReg will display this to the student.

Scenario 2:
Joe Student prefers to enroll in Human 1AS/A Lec B but it is full. He enrolls in Lec C and Dis 30, and he waitlists Lec B and Dis 21. If space becomes available in Dis 21 and Joe is first on the waitlist, he will be added to Lec B and Dis 21. (Co-classes must match in total capacity, so Lec B must have space if Dis 21 is open.)

Scenario 3:
All sections of Human 1AS/A are full. Students who meet enrollment restrictions can waitlist their preferred lecture and discussion section. If space becomes available the first student on the waitlist is added to the course.

*Note: Students are sent an email notification of changes to their schedule resulting from waitlist transactions.
