A formal part-time study program with reduced fees is available with approval of the student’s academic dean or, in the case of graduate students, the dean of Graduate Division and the departmental advisor. The form for undergraduate students is available at the Office of the Registrar. Graduate students may download the form.
Submission deadline for the Petition for Part-Time Study:
Graduate students submit the petition to the Graduate Division by Wednesday of the third week of instruction. Allowable reasons for part-time study: A reduced fee part-time study program may be approved only for reasons of occupation, family responsibilities, or health. Length of program: Part-time status is granted for an academic year (from the beginning of the first quarter as part-time to the end of the applicable academic year). An approved petition with the cancel box checked, submitted to the Registrar's Office, will cancel part-time status during the year. Students must reapply for the part-time study program each academic year. Course enrollment limitations: Ten units or less for undergraduates; eight units or less for graduates (however, graduate students must also meet residence requirements - see below). These unit limits will be enforced from the time the petition is filed to the end of the quarter and you will be assessed for full-time fees if your enrollment exceeds the allowable amount. There are no exceptions to the enrollment limit or the filing deadline. Fee amounts: In addition to all other required fees, students approved for part-time status pay one-half of the Educational Fee and, if applicable, 50% of the Nonresident Tuition Fee and/or Professional School Student Fee. Students assessed full-time fees may have the assessment changed before paying fees by submitting the approved petition for part-time study to the Registrar's Office or the Graduate Division. The approved petition must be submitted before the fee payment deadline. Don’t wait until the last day. Allow sufficient time for the review processes and approval. Petitions for part-time study may be submitted after full-time enrollment fees have been paid if the deadline stated above has not passed. Refunds will be mailed to qualifying students during the fifth week of classes for the quarter. Students receiving financial aid should check with the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships regarding the status of their refund.Fee payment deadlines: Part-time students are expected to observe the campuswide fee payment and enrollment deadlines. Health insurance: Undergraduate students approved for part-time status are eligible for the University's student health insurance and may use the Student Health Center facilities. Graduate students approved for part-time status are eligible for GSHIP. Financial Aid: Students receiving financial aid should check with the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships before filing for a part-time study program to determine how their financial aid award will be affected. In most cases, part-time enrollment affects eligibility for deferment of repayment of student loans. Fellowships (Graduate Students): All University fellowships require full-time enrollment in graduate level courses. For extramural fellowships, students must refer to and adhere to the individual agency guidelines established by the sponsor. Please be advised that part-time status will make students ineligible for any fellowship support that they may have received previously in the quarter for which they are petitioning for part-time status. F1 student visa: Students attending UCI on an F1 student visa must enroll full-time (12 or more units) and should not file for part-time study without the approval of the International Center. Graduate residence requirement: Graduate students must complete a minimum of four units per quarter to meet the graduate residence requirement. |
