Major/Degree Search Information  

How to Search

To retrieve the entire database, select Reset Menu, then select Display Web Results.

Use the applicable pull-down menus, text boxes, and checkboxes to enter your search criteria:

School From the pull-down menu, select a school or select all schools (ALL). To view all graduate majors, select ALL, then uncheck the undergraduate box.
Major Code Enter a 3-digit major code or, by selecting the  image, an alphabetical list of majors will be displayed on a separate window. Selecting the major code will insert that code into the search form.
Major Title Contains Search on any portion of a 20-character major title.
Major Title Abbreviation Search on the 7-character major title abbreviation. This is the major that can be displayed in WebRoster and WebGrades.
From Term The format for entering "From Term" information is "tyy". Example: "F04" where "F" indicates the Fall term and "04" indicates the year 2004 in 2-digit "yy" format. Additional term abbreviations are "W" for Winter, "S" for Spring and "X" for Summer.
To Term The format for entering "To Term" information is "tyy". Example: "F04" where "F" indicates the Fall term and "04" indicates the year 2004 in 2-digit "yy" format. Additional term abbreviations are "W" for Winter, "S" for Spring and "X" for Summer.
Undergraduate Checking this box will result in majors offered to undergraduate students.
Graduate Checking this box will result in majors offered to graduate students.
Degree Awarded From the pull-down menu, select a degree type or select all degree types (ALL).
Degree Title Contains Search on any portion of a degree title.

Select "Display Web Results"

Selecting "Reset Menu" will return the search form to its default criteria.

The search results will appear below the search form. Results may be sorted by selecting the column title. All available information for each result set may be viewed by selecting either the "" or "" symbols on the right-side of the table. Selecting the "view" link in the Comments column will display the comments for the respective record in a separate window.

Glossary

TERM: DEFINITION:
School School code
2-digit code for the school on the Irvine campus to which a major/degree is affiliated.
Major/degree programs that have changed school affiliation are listed under both schools. Examples include Linguistics (510), Film Studies (365), and Women's Studies (928).
Note: The School code for graduate majors/degrees is 00. Use 00 as the School code for all data reporting transactions. The School column displays the school affiliation of the major.
UGM U, G, or M
Major/degree is valid for Undergraduate students.
Major/degree is valid for Graduate students. Use School code 00 for data reporting transactions.
Major/degree is valid for Medical students: to search use school code = 88, major code = 558.
Major Code Major code
3-character code for every major offered on the Irvine campus since fall 1965.
Codes are assigned by the Corporate Student System (UCOP) when a new major/degree program is approved.
Major Title 20 Major title
20-character title of major.
Major Start Term Major start term
First term a major is offered or admitting/accepting students. Fall 1965 (F65) is the first term any majors were offered on the Irvine campus.
Major End Term Major end term
Last term major is offered or admitting/accepting students. Often, students already in a program may remain in the major while finishing degree requirements, even though the major is no longer accepting new admits.
Degree Awd Degree awarded
Degree(s) awarded for this major.
Degree Title Degree title
Degree title as posted to student transcript when awarded. In general, for graduate students, the degree title will match the 50-character major title. In general, for undergraduate students, the degree title will match the 20-character major title.
Degree Start Term Degree start term
First term degree is approved to be awarded.
Degree End Term Degree end term
Last term degree is approved to be awarded.
G_H General campus or health science indicator
General campus: a G in this column indicates this major/degree program is affiliated with the general campus. Health Science Indicator: an H in this column indicates this major/degree program is affiliated with the School of Medicine.
Sort Code Sort code for major code
4-digit code assigned by OR/SAIS to alphabetize major codes by major titles (20-character).
Academic Yr Appr Academic year major approved by UCOP
Academic year during which major/degree is approved/assigned by UCOP. May be prior to start term.

Format: "yyyy" Example: "0001" is the 2000 - 2001 academic year. "00" indicates the year 2000 in 2-digit "yy" format. "01" indicates the year 2001 in 2-digit "yy" format. Sort results on this column are numeric and not chronological.

Major Title 50 Major title 50-character
50-character title of major.
SOC Dept Title 7 SOC department abbreviation 7-character
Department under which courses for this major are offered.
SOC Dept Title 40 SOC department abbreviation 40-character
Department under which courses for this major are offered.
UC Discipline UC Discipline
A 3-digit code indicating the UC discipline associated with an academic program. Used primarily for reporting of degrees and areas of study. Assigned by UCOP.
CIP Code CIP code
Classification of Instructional Program (6-digit, formatted xx.xxxx). A federal coding structure used to codify and unify majors and academic disciplines across institutions. Used primarily for reporting of enrollment and degrees confirmed to the Department of Education.
MS MA Start Yr MS/MA may be awarded start academic year
Start academic year, in which no MS/MA degree is available/valid. Per UCI catalogue, Undergraduate and Graduate Degrees, footnote: "Emphasis at the graduate level is on study leading to a Ph.D. degree; the master's degree may be awarded to Ph.D. students after fulfillment of the appropriate requirements."

MS MA End Yr MS/MA may be awarded last or current academic year
Current or last academic year in which no MS/MA degree was available/valid.

Format: "yyyy" Example: "0001" is the 2000-2001 academic year. "00" indicates the year 2000 in 2-digit "yy" format. "01" indicates the year "2001" in 2-digit year "yy" format. Sort results on this column are numeric and not chronological.

First academic year during which the major/degree program stopped admitting students.

Adm Avail End "admission not available" last or current academic year
Academic year through which the major/degree program remained/remains closed to admission.

When an undergraduate student is awarded a double major in one school, for space reasons, the degree titles may need to be abbreviated from the 20-character major title.
