Office of the University Registrar COVID-19 Fall 2020 Pass/Not Pass FAQ’s

Revised: 1 October 2020

The Academic Senate at UCI, which governs academic regulations at UC Irvine, has authorized adjustments to existing undergraduate regulations on Pass/Not Pass grades (P/NP) for the Fall quarter only as follows:

  • All undergraduate courses will offer P/NP grading as an option. It is the student’s choice as to whether they wish to take the course for letter grade or P/NP.
  • Academic deans and departments are encouraged, but not required, to allow courses taken P/NP to fulfill school and major requirements.
  • Students will be able to change their grade options, both letter grade to P/NP and P/NP to letter grade through November 25th, the day before the Thanksgiving holiday.
  • Courses taken P/NP will not count toward the 12-unit overall graduation cap on these courses.
  • Students on academic probation may enroll in courses with the P/NP option in the Fall 2020 term.

Please note: The Senate recently extended these adjustments to allow students to take certain Writing courses—Writing 37, 39A, and 39AP—on a P/NP basis.

General FAQ's

  • How do P/NP courses affect my GPA?
    • Pass and Not Pass grade do not carry any grade points; they have no impact on your GPA.
  • How good does my work need to be to earn a Pass in a course?
    • Your work needs to be equivalent to “C” level work or better to earn a Pass.
  • Can I take any course I want P/NP?
    • Possibly. Academic deans and departments are encouraged, but not required, to allow courses taken P/NP to fulfill school and major requirements. Please check with your advisor before selecting the P/NP option for any course required for your school, major, or minor.
    • These adjustments do not override additional school or major limitations on the use of P/NP courses for degree requirements. For example, many schools are requiring that all courses for majors must be taken for a letter grade in Fall 2020. Please review your school’s undergradate website and look for direct email communications from your school.
  • Can I take more than one course P/NP in Fall 2020?
    • Yes. Please note that students in the School of Information and Computer Sciences may not enroll in more than twenty units P/NP in a single term.
  • If I have already taken the maximum of twelve units P/NP, can I count P/NP courses taken in Fall 2020 toward the 180 units required for my degree?
    • Yes.
  • I am on academic contract in my school and my contract specifies I have to take all my courses for a letter grade. Do I still have to enroll in everything for a letter grade?
    • No, you are allowed to enroll in courses P/NP in Fall 2020.
  • I plan to take a course in Fall 2020 or later that requires a “C” or better in a course I’m taking in Fall 2020. Will a Pass grade meet the prerequisite or do I need to take my course for a letter grade?
    • Pass grades earned in Fall 2020 will meet prerequisite requirements for courses that require a “C” or better grade in the class.
  • I need to repeat a class I earned a letter grade in. Can I repeat it on a Pass/Not Pass basis?
    • No, you must repeat it with a letter grade.
  • I am taking a course for P/NP in the Fall 2020 term. Can I repeat the course for a letter grade in the Winter 2021 term and later?
    • You may repeat a course if you earn an NP grade. You may not repeat a course if you earn a P grade.
  • How will I enroll for classes with the P/NP option?
    • During the first two weeks of Fall 2020 you will use WebReg to enroll as you normally do. Beginning October 16, you must submit a request through Enrollment Exceptions, which you can find in Student Access.
  • When is the last day I can change my grading basis?
    • You may change your grading basis until the day before the Thanksgiving holiday: November 25. No changes can be made after November 25, 2020.
  • I took a course P/NP but got a better grade in the class than I expected. Can I have it retroactively changed to a letter grade?
    • No.
  • I took a course P/NP in Spring or Summer 2020; what are the rules for those courses?
  • I took a course letter grade but got a worse grade in the class than I expected. Can I have it retroactively changed to P/NP?
    • No.
  • I am an international student. Can I take courses P/NP?
    • You may enroll in P/NP courses so long as you are in full-time status (twelve units) and making normal progress toward your degree. Contact your academic advisor if you are unsure whether you are making normal progress.
  • I receive veterans’ benefits. If I get an NP in a class, will there be an impact to my benefits?
    • Your Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) may be reduced if you receive a No Pass (NP) grade. The VA will not pay for units that receive a NP grade (non-punitive), as the units do not count toward your degree progress and are not factored into your GPA. Units that are graded NP must be deducted from your certified unit load. If this drops you below 12 units, your MHA will be reduced accordingly and the VA will bill you for the balance. If you would like to get more information, please contact the Veteran Services Center (VSC) at veteran@uci.edu.
  • I am planning to go medical/health or law school and those schools count NP grades as “F” grades for purposes of admission. Will taking a class P/NP affect me?
    • While many law and medical schools have announced they will not penalize students for taking courses P/NP during Fall 2020; not all have done so. Contact the school(s) to which you plan to apply to see if their admissions criteria have changed. If you are planning to get a medical or health degree, please continue to work with your advisor in Biological Sciences—Pre Health.
  • I plan to go to graduate school. Will taking a class P/NP affect me?
    • Contact the school(s) to which you plan to apply to see how they will evaluate courses taken P/NP during the Fall 2020 term.
  • Will I be charged the $3 enrollment exception charge if I request to change my grading option?
    • No.

Financial Aid

  • I receive federal aid/a Pell grant. If I get an NP in a class will there be an impact to my financial aid?
    • Possibly. The Department of Education considers an NP grade to be an “F” for the purposes of making Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). SAP requirements are not the same as the requirements for normal progress at UCI. Additional information about SAP requirements can be found online at https://www.ofas.uci.edu/content/PoliciesAndConditions.aspx?nav=3.
  • I was awarded UCI distinguished scholarship category (Regents’, Chancellor’s Excellence, Directors’, Deans’, and Promise). If I get a P or NP in a class will there be an impact?
    • Possibly. All scholarships in the distinguished scholarship category will be automatically renewed in Fall 2020. However, you should be enrolled fulltime (minimum 12 units) I each quarter and combine enrolled P/NP courses with enrolled letter-grade courses during the academic year 20-21 so that you can meet the minimum cumulative UCI GPA requirement by the end of the spring 2021 quarter for any of the awarded distinguished scholarships. You should also not have any NP grade scores for the purpose of a potential renewability of the awarded scholarship in the 21-22 academic year.
  • I was awarded UCI campus-wide and/or school-specific scholarship. If I get a P or NP in a class will there be an impact?
    • Possibly. All campus-wide and school-specific scholarships require full-time enrollment (minimum 12 units) and minimum cumulative GPA. You may enroll in P/NP courses during fall quarter. However, you should combine enrolled P/NP courses with enrolled letter-grade courses during the academic year 20-21 so that you can meet the minimum cumulative UCI GPA requirement for your awarded scholarship by the end of the spring 2021 quarter. You should also not have any NP grade scores for the purpose of a potential renewability of the awarded scholarship in the 21-22 academic year.
  • I have an external scholarship from an outside agency. If I get an NP in a class will there be an impact to my scholarship?
    • Possibly. Check the terms of your scholarship or contact the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships at finaid@uci.edu with attention to “Fiscal Unit”.
  • I have a financial aid question that isn’t on this list. Whom do I contact for a response?
